We’ve waited a long time for this. But now the time has finally come! Mini Segways are now also available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The development of new technologies means that more and more products are coming onto the market that makes our lives easier. Ever since the movie Back to the Future, many have dreamed of owning a hoverboard. Unfortunately, technology is not (yet) advanced enough for these boards to float. A few years ago, the first Segways came onto the market. These were a real revolution at the time. You may have had the opportunity to stand on one of these Segways. However, these are still very expensive and hardly affordable for private use. This is now changing.
The hype surrounding these mini-Segways began, as did many other technological innovations in the United States. This trend has now also reached Germany. Occasionally you can already see the first gold hoverboard owners on the streets, which attracts everyone’s attention.
Mini Segway
Controlling the Mini Segway is very easy by shifting your body weight. In the beginning, this is still quite difficult, but after a short practice phase, you have the feeling as if you are controlling the hoverboard with your thoughts.
The driver’s inclination angle is measured by an electronic gyroscope, while the electric hoverboard balances itself with the help of a dynamic stability system. This is exactly how it works with Segways, which you may already know. The base is covered with rubber to prevent slipping. So you have a grip even on wet roads. We drive the Mini Segway with a battery, which can be recharged again and again. Depending on the product, the mini-Segway has a range of around 15km before it needs to be recharged. These hoverboards can reach about 15-20 km/h. If it gets dark, the additional LED headlights offer more safety on the one hand, but also a futuristic appearance on the other. Thanks to its lightweight, you can take it with you anywhere.
E-Board, Self Balance Board
Hoverboard, Self Balance Scooter, E-Board, Self Balance Board, or Mini Segways. In Germany, there is still no precise definition. In the United States, however, these boards are often called hoverboards or mini-segways. These names will very likely also establish themselves in Germany. Often they are also called “Self Balance Board” or “Self Balance Scooters”. The name “Two-wheel scooter” is often mentioned in many product descriptions. Most people know the term “hoverboard” from the film “Back to the Future”, which was released in 1985, 1989, and 1990. This film describes a board that hovers above the ground and is used as a means of locomotion. The technology is still not that far today. Except for floating, these two boards have a lot in common and so a dream of many people is finally coming true.
How dangerous are these Mini Segways?
As with cycling, skating, or inline skating, wearing a crash helmet is also highly recommended. Speeds of 20km/h can be reached. A fall on the head at these speeds can be very bad for the rider. Wearing knee and elbow pads is also recommended. To be seen at night, LEDs are installed so that you can be seen by drivers. We do not recommend driving on busy roads. In addition, these Mini Segways are not recommended for small children.
How are Mini Segways controlled?
It is controlled using your body weight. There is no steering wheel like on bicycles. With a little practice, you’ll feel like you can control the board with your mind. For example, if you bend your body slightly forward, the board will start to go straight. The more you lean forward, the faster you go. Bend back slightly to slow down. Depending on the angle, the board breaks more or less. The change of direction is determined by the load and the position of the foot. If you put weight on your right foot, the board goes to the left. If you put weight on your left foot, it moves to the right. The reason for this is that the wheel on the outside of the curve has to turn faster than the wheel on the inside of the curve. You can do all of this after a few minutes of practice. The more you drive, the more you do it automatically. We have written a few tips to get you started, which we hope will help you.
The advantages of a Mini Segway
Mini Segways have several advantages. They are small, light, and therefore handy and can be taken anywhere. There are also roller hoverboard bags for some hoverboards, which make transport even more comfortable. With a speed of 15-20 km/h, you are also much faster than walking. This makes the way to work, to the bakery, to school, or even to friends much more pleasant. Unfortunately, so far only driving on private property is officially allowed. This board is far cheaper than a real Segway. Prices range from 200€ to 1500€. You pay about as much for a Segway as for a small car. We had a lot of fun riding them in our hoverboard test and were a real eye-catcher as this type of transportation is still fairly unknown.

These work on the same principle as the hoverboards – but have only one wheel, and not two. They need a little more time to get used to it, but after about 15 minutes of practice, they can be driven without any problems. They are available in different price ranges. The cheapest starts at around 300 euros. The professional devices start at around 1000 euros. Depending on the product, they can reach speeds of up to 40km/h! We can recommend this as an alternative without reservation! We have written test reports for electric unicycles that should make your purchase decision easier.
